Joseph Johnson, age 33, of Wyandanch, was sentenced to 18 years behind bars in Suffolk County Court on Monday, Sept. 25.
It came months after he pleaded guilty to first-degree rape stemming from an attack at a Wyandanch home.
According to prosecutors, Johnson admitted to breaking into the victim’s home on Sept. 19, 2020. He then raped the woman before stealing cash and fleeing.
After the break-in, the victim put up several security cameras in and around her home. Two days later, Johnson returned to the property and cut their wires or turned them away from the home.
Surveillance footage captured before the cameras were damaged shows Johnson, wearing white clown makeup, going back inside the victim’s home.
He was later arrested by Suffolk County Police and can be seen with remnants of the white face paint in his mugshot.
Investigators tied him to the rape using DNA testing, according to prosecutors.
“This defendant subjected the victim to horrific violence and stole her sense of security that she once felt within her home,” said Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond Tierney.
“I hope this sentence provides the victim a feeling of safety knowing that the defendant will be in prison where he can no longer hurt her, or anyone else, again.”
In addition to his prison sentence, Johnson must complete 20 years of post-release supervision and register as a sex offender.
